Curtis Jackson, or 50 Cent did not have an easy ride in life. His mother was only 15 when she had him, and quickly turned into a serious drug dealer in order to support her son. When Curtis was 8 his mother was killed, perhaps the result of a drug war, this left Curtis in the care of his grandmother who also had 9 other children to look after. Because of this Curtis soon turned to dealing drugs himself, as “I didn't want to ask her (grandmother) for a pair of Air Jordans when I knew she couldn't afford them”. By the time Curtis was 19 he was himself the neighbourhood drug kingpin, bringing in about $150,000 a month. He spent most of his time in jail where he tried his had at writing lyrics, and when his son was born he decided to stop dealing drugs and try out as a musician.
A good decision as his first CD, Get Rich or Die Tryin', sold more than 6.4 million copies, which made it the best-selling CD of the year. He continues to make best selling albums, is considering movie deals and has launched his own fragrances.
Not bad for a boy brought up on the roughest neighbourhoods in the boroughs of New York City.
