The 11th Commandment – Thou shalt cleanse, tone & moisturise every day……but why??!

Hello, Good Afternoon and welcome back! Or if you’re new to my blog, thank you for joining me ! I must say you’re looking more beautiful than normal today! Have you done something with your hair? Make up? No?  Oooooooh it must be because you have a strict skincare routine that you follow every morning and it makes your skin look radiant, shiny and like you’ve had 8 hours sleep even when you may not have done??! WHAT??! No?!

No, me neither – if you’re anything like me then you will have heard the various big cheeses in the skin care / beauty regime market drum into our minds that we should cleanse, tone and moisturise every day – some even say in the morning and at night – but do any of you know why?

I don’t, so because I’m nice I thought I would find out for you and share my fruitful knowledge.

One of my ‘BFF’s’ spends a small fortune in looking after herself and to look at her it is worth every penny because she is by far one of the most beautiful people I know both in looks, heart and personality – and one of the things I know she can’t live without is the 3 Step Skincare regime from Clinique  – this is essentially as follows :

Step 1 – Cleanse

The first step in Clinique’s 3-Step Skin Care System. Cleanses without stripping protective lipids. Preps skin for the exfoliating action of Clarifying Lotion.

Step 2 – Exfoliate / Tone

Step 2 in Clinique’s 3-Step Skin Care System-and the difference-maker for great skin. Gentle exfoliating lotion developed by Clinique’s

dermatologists de-flakes to reveal clearer skin. Smoothes the way for moisture.

Step 3 – Moisturise

Dramatically Different Moisturizing Lotion helps duplicate the moisture naturally occuring in the skin to provide comfort and balance to your skin.

These explanations above are taken from the test I did on the Clinique website to find out what skin type I am and what cleansing regime I would require, as they accommodate everything from really dry skin to very oily skin. The website was very helpful, took me through a series of questions including what colour my hair is and what colour eyes I have (I’m not sure why?!) and came to the conclusion that :

You (meaning me, not you!) are a Skin Type 2: Dry Combination

  • You have combination skin, which means you’re oily in the T-Zone but cheeks are uncomfortably dry when you don’t use a moisturizer.
  • Your priority is to keep skin in balance – add moisture to some areas and keep oily spots under control.

Now having only had a few facials and not being completely comfortable with a set skincare routine – yet – I can only go on the knowledge I have acquired but surprisingly enough that is what I have been told on several different occasions – clever computer! I am lucky enough to rarely get spots and I have always been blessed with healthy looking skin (for the majority of time).

So then I priced it up – £59!!! Ouchhhhh!! Won’t soap and water do the same trick??! Alas, no. A good daily skin care routine is vital to keep your skin clean, hydrated, protected, healthy and glowing. And for this, it is important to make cleansing, toning, moisturising and protecting a regular feature in your routine. Although it might seem like hard work at first, it takes just minutes in reality and can leave you (and your skin!) feeling fresh and nourished.

It is absolutely vital to determine your skin type prior to using any product on your skin. This is because the type of products you use will depend on your skin type – and with such varying degrees of skin types how can it be possible for us all to be able to use soap and water?

  • Cleansing

Having a beautifully cleansed face is the first step in the routine – cleansing removes make up, toxins and dirt and helps to open up your pores. Those with dry skin should use a cream cleanser while those with oily skin should use a medicated cleanser designed to reduce breakouts. It can come in liquid, soap or wipe form so don’t worry about the pennies just yet!

  • Toning

This is the step that can leave some skin care newcomers a little confused.  Toner is not to be feared but to be embraced – it helps to clarify and refresh whilst simultaneously toning your skin.  Some contain Witch hazel to help tighten pores and allantoin to help soften and protect your skin.  Always use a toner formulated for your skin type.  Those with very dry skin should use an alcohol free toner, also called a tonic.

  • Moisturising

The last step is my favourite one of all. Once you’ve removed all the bad from your skin, its time to replace it with the good. Moisturisation not only hydrates the skin, but the massaging action helps to boost blood circulation, providing your skin with the food and oxygen it needs. Just like cleansers they are designed to suit your skin type so make sure you know what that is first!

The result? Healthy looking, hydrated, beautiful skin!

Does that help then?! You know what, I feel inspired, and so should you – and whats even better is that I don’t even have to find time to get to a shop and sift through the thousand different products available – its all here at a click of a button! I wish I could tell you that a bar of dove and some hot water would do the trick, but that would only be true if we all had the same skin type – in fact, to let you in to a bit of a secret until I was about 16 that is all I used but I decided that my skin, if it was going to remain so sparkly, beautiful and young looking (ahem) needed a bit more attention and care. And don’t worry – theres no way in the world that you suddenly need to splash out £59 in Clinique just yet – for one they do small travel sizes that might be worth a try before you invest, and there are also lots of other equally commendable brands on the market that do the same job for a fraction of a price. (Clinique is definitely going on my wish list for santa though!)

I’ll let you know how I’m getting on in a few weeks – justify the spending not like I used to ‘how can it be that I need to spend so much to wash muck off my face?!’ but rather see it as an investment into keeping your skin youthful, sparkly and fresh faced for as long as is humanly possible.

Hope you’re having a lovely week – I’m off to admire myself a bit more in the mirror, then grab the twix that has been staring me and indulge in another guilty pleasure!

Lots of love, hugs and warm squeezes
