Who Hides Behind Celebrities’ Fragrances?

What can singers or actors know about fragrances? Perhaps not much, but they certainly know who to choose to make them with. You might have heard the expression “the nose behind” a certain fragrance. There are literally famous and insured noses around the world belonging to men and women who work for internationally recognized fashion and cosmetic houses to create the perfect mix of ingredients of a fragrance.

1. Britney Spears

Britney Spears has 16 branded perfumes that account for 35% of all celebrity perfume sales. Her fragrance “Curious” was born from a partnership with Coty and the nose behind is Claude Dir, who has also worked for fashion houses such as Hugo Boss, Elizabeth Arden and Bond no. 9. Launched in 2004 “Curious”soon became a hit (-me-baby-one-more-time) and is still the most sold fragrance of all her other brands (and also the best one according to us!)

2. Beyoncé

Claude Dir also worked together with Olivier Gillotin to create Beyoncé’s “Heat“. This fragrance was launched in 2010 and represents Beyoncé‘s energy during her performances. The previously mentioned Oliver Gillotin also collaborated with Donna Karan to realize “DKNY Be Delicious for Men“. Going back to Mrs Carter… she is actually allergic to perfume! Then how can she know anything about the perfume-biz, you ask? Well, here’s the thing. All her fragrances and all the others she endorses, like “Emporio Armani Diamonds“, have been chemically altered so that she can wear them! 3. Rihanna

RiRi seems to be all over the place in the fashion world recently. Not only is she the new Creative Director of Puma, but she also has several branded perfumes on the market. Her fragrances “Reb’l Fleur” and “Rebelle” have been created together with Marypierre Julien and Caroline Sabas, who also collaborated with Calvin Klein. “Rogue Man” was released in 2014 and there is a truly special nose behind it: Frank Voelkl. He collaborated with several famous cosmetic and fashion houses such as Avon, Ermenegildo Zegna, Guerlain, Marc Jacobs, Oscar de la Renta and Tommy Hilfiger. Nothing more to say, really. Rihanna is working her way through fashion and she is rocking it.

4. One Direction

Finally, some boys. Five of them, to be precise. One Direction’s first fragrance, “Our Moment“, was officially the fastest selling perfume of ALL TIME. In Christmas 2013 it outsold Chanel No. 5 and Miss Dior, and also won the award for “Consumer Choice Celebrity Fragrance of the Year” in 2014, beating fashion houses like Giorgio Armani and Prada. Who was the cosmetic house behind this surprisingly brilliant fragrance? Elizabeth Arden. The fragrance’s success was immediate and prompted the boy-band to create two other fragrances, “That Moment” and “You & I“. Their fan base obviously contributed to the large success of their first fragrance, but then again, not everyone loves One Direction, so they must be doing something right, right?

5. Antonio Banderas

Our favourite Zorro, Tango Dancer and Puss in Boots. This muy macho-man has definitely been around for quite a while and yet he never ceases to surprise. His fragrances were created in collaboration with Puig, particularly with two special noses: Olivier Cresp and Rosendo Mateu. These two valuable noses have worked and keep working with the greatest fashion and cosmetic houses of all time, such as Cacharel, Boucheron, Carolina Herrera, Dior, Diesel, Givenchy, Dolce & Gabbana, Nina Ricci, Paco Rabanne and many others. Antonio Banderas has proved to deeply understand both men and women, and he  certainly also knows who to call to translate that understanding into seductive fragrances. What can you expect from such a caliente man?

6. David Beckham

Beckham is like a 40 year old whiskey: rare, incredible, elegantly mellow and supple.  The more he ages, the better he gets. Of course his fame and success have mainly derived from his football career, which has seen its fortune in some of the most important stadiums in the history of football, from Old Trafford to Bernabeu, from San Siro to Parc de Princes. Although his football career was very successful, it did not tie him down to one skill. He soon became a business man and a fashion icon, together with his wife Victoria. Beckham fragrances are produced in conjunction with global beauty products manufacturer, Coty, which also collaborates with other celebrities, such as Heidi Klum and Halle Berry. “Intimately Beckham Men” was launched in 2006 and is the winner of two awards: “Fragrance of the Year Men’s Popular Appeal” and “Best Packaging Men’s Popular Appeal” in 2008. Sylvie Fischer was the nose behind “Signature for Her“, introduced in 2008. She has also worked with other brands, such as Kenzo, Jil Sander and Harley Davidson. Who knew Beckham’s football goals weren’t the only ones he was going to score in his life? Nice one, mate.

Every celebrity relies on special noses and cosmetic houses to create their fragrances. Madonna, Lady Gaga and Kylie Minogue work with Coty, Paris Hilton with Parlux, Justin Bieber and Usher with Honorine Blanc (who has also worked for YSL and Vera Wang), Katy Perry with Givaudan and Laurent Le Guernec (who has also collaborated with Michael Kors and Marc Jacobs) and so on. So, dear perfume lovers: don’t judge a book by its cover. Behind a celebrity’s fragrance, there is a professional and famous nose eager to seduce your senses!
