History of Burberry

Thomas Burberry opened his first shop in Basingstoke, Hampshire, in 1856 and this is where the international luxury brand began. The iconic trench coat, which became the symbol of Burberry, was originally commissioned by the war office to adapt its officer's coat to suit the conditions of contemporary warfare. After the war, the look remained fashionable and popular with civilians and the iconic Burberry check was created in 1920 to be used as a lining in the coat. It remains one of the most popular items of the Burberry brand today.
