Did You Know Fragrances Have Families?

Perfumes and Aftershaves are created using many different ingredients but there's usually one dominant scent that enables them to fall within a particular family. With their myriad of notes ranging from fruits and flowers to woods and leathers, fragrances all smell unique and can be described in many different ways. Thankfully all fragrances fit within one of the following groups. So if you are looking to find something new you can find a similar scent to what you know and love.

Find the fragrance family for you

1. Aquatic

Think of Davidoff Cool Water Woman Wave and Azzaro Chrome Aqua. These majestic fragrances have salty, marine undercurrents that are often accentuated with mint, citrus and floral notes. Designed to transport you to sunny beaches across the globe with just one sniff. The branding and appearance of aquatic fragrances tend to reflect that, depicting tropical turquoise seas or the deep ocean blue.

2. Aromatic

The Aromatic family can range from green and fresh to spicy or fruity. It is one of the more wide-ranging categories as it includes herbal notes such as lavender, pine, sage, mint and rosemary. Many male fragrances fall into the aromatic fragrance family as perfumers have a tendency to lighten the aftershaves with herbal scents or floral ones. Popular aromatic aftershave includes Acqua di Parma, Hugo Boss Hugo Man and Mont Blanc Explorer.

3. Chypre

This fragrance group is named after the perfume ‘Chypre’ (french for Cyprus) that was launched by Coty in 1917. It has a very distinctive and popular combination of notes that was originally created to depict the scent of the island.

Chypre has now become its own group, which includes perfumes such as Calvin Klein Euphoria Intense and Viktor & Rolf Flowerbomb In The Sky. Chypre fragrances usually have citrus top notes combined with base notes of oakmoss and patchouli.

Floral perfume

4. Floral

Floral fragrances are the most common of all. The floral scents are ideal for perfumes and aftershaves as they can be combined with almost any other notes to create a range of fragrances that can be green, woody or even fruity.

Many fragrances have a floral heart or mid-tones that envelop you after the initial burst, as it begins to dry down. Some floral combinations create bright, sweet scents like freshly picked flowers. Others create a soft, powdery floral scent.

5. Fresh

This family is often the combination of Citrus, Aquatic and Aromatic notes to produce fragrances that are fresh and fun. Such as Calvin Klein CK One Summer and Cerruti 1881. The zesty notes of fresh fragrances are mostly desired during the warmer Spring and Summer months as they commonly include notes of lemon, bergamot, lime, lemongrass, orange and grapefruit mixed with mint, basil and sandalwood.

6. Leather

Not often thought of when describing fragrances and certainly not the most common. Still, the leather family includes some modern icons such as Paco Rabanne's 1 Million Parfum & Carolina Herrera's Bad Boy Le Parfum. Mostly found in aftershaves for their masculine aroma, 'leather' is used to describe a range of musky and smoky base notes that create quite powerful, signature fragrances.

Oriental fragrance

7. Oriental

One of the more complex fragrance families, Oriental combines open notes of citrus fruits with aromatic middles notes of herbs and spices all layered over a woody base. Popular options from this family include Joop! Homme & Estee Lauder Youth Dew.

8. Woody

Woody fragrances are rich, warm and earthy. The woody notes are commonly found as base notes and are paired with citrus, aromatic or floral top notes. Popular woody notes are sandal, cedar, oak, pine and agarwood (oud), moss and resins. The woody family includes a great array of perfumes and aftershaves that includes the luxury fragrance of Tom Ford Private Blend Oud Wood and popular men's aftershave Armaf Club De Nuit Intense which was built from the ground up to create a richer and longer-lasting fragrance.
