Alaia Paris Perfume & Women's Fragrance
Alaia Paris was founded by Tunisian-born designer Azzedine Alaia. His figure-hugging designs became famous in the 1980s and his collections have been described as timeless fashion statements, epitomising the modern woman. This is also reflected in his signature fragrance, which was released in 2015.
Azzedine Alaia was born in Tunisia but moved to Paris in 1957 to pursue his dream of becoming a fashion designer. There he worked for Christian Dior, Guy Laroche and Thierry Mugler before opening a small independent tailoring atelier in Paris in the 1970s. He created his first ready-to-wear collection for his label Alaia in the following decade which brought him global success. In 1984 he was awarded the Oscar de la Mode for Best Designer of the Year and enjoyed rapidly growing international fame. With the endorsement of famous fashion editors the brand quickly expanded and by the late 80s Alaia had opened two stores in the USA. His figure-hugging womenswear earned him the nickname 'The King of Cling'. After a quiet period in the 90s, Alaia returned through a partnership with fashion giant Prada in 2000 but the designer managed to acquire almost all rights to his designs back from the Prada group in 2007.
This made Azzedine Alaia one of the very few designers who managed to buy back their name and brand from a global fashion player. For his achievements he was awarded French knighthood in 2008. Famous admirers of Azzedine Alaia's work are amongst others: Greta Garbo, Grace Jones (who parades a number of examples of his artistry in the Bond classic View to a Kill), Madonna, Naomi Campbell, Shakira and Michelle Obama.
Alaia Paris launched its fragrance line with the signature fragrance Alaia Paris for women (2015). The scent was developed by Marie Salamagne, who previously created perfumes for brands such as Armani, Grès, Jo Malone, Kenzo, Vivien Westwood and Yves Saint Laurent. The idea behind the perfume is reportedly the smell of “cold water falling on hot chalk”. It mixes warm leather and musk accords with a pink pepper top note and floral notes of freesia and peony. Just like its contents, the black and gold bottle is inspired by the 'Alaia woman' who is sensuous, emancipated, and body-conscious. The bottle was designed by sculptural artist Martin Szekely.
